ERPNext or Odoo: what "open source" actually costs you

Both are excellent. The difference is what happens when you need a feature, a change or a new vendor.

Odoo and ERPNext regularly end up on the same shortlist. Both are modern, both have large communities, and both will serve a growing company well. The deciding questions are about licensing and ownership, not features.

Where the models differ

  • ERPNext ships every module under one open licence. Odoo splits a free Community edition from a paid Enterprise edition.
  • ERPNext costs you implementation and hosting. Per-user pricing means an Enterprise bill grows with every hire.
  • Because every ERPNext module is open, any competent partner can support you, including a different one next year.

When Odoo is still the right call

If you want a huge app marketplace and your team already knows it, Odoo is a fine choice. Pick it knowing which features sit behind the paid edition.
